Welcome Reception for Developmental Education Symposium Keynote Speakers Print E-mail

Baton Rouge Community College's (BRCC) STARS Gate Title III Program is gearing up to host their 6th Annual Developmental Education Symposium. The symposium is designed to provide educators across Louisiana with innovative ideas, tools, and resources, that promote student success, retention, and best practices.

The event will be held on Thursday, April 10, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., in the Louisiana Board Room, located on BRCC's Mid City Campus, 201 Community College Drive. The keynote speakers for the event are Dr. Jon Roueche and Dr. Terry O'Banion.


Join us for a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, April 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in the Magnolia Library Reading Room. All BRCC students, faculty, and staff, are invited to attend.

Dr. Jon Roueche is the president of the Roueche Graduate Center, National American University. He is recognized as a national authority in community college education. He has written 35 books and more than 150 chapters and articles, and he has visited and spoken to over 1,300 community colleges and universities.

Dr. Roueche has received national recognition for his research, service and leadership, including the 2012 Lifetime Leadership Achievement Award from the American Association of Community Colleges; the 2012 Diverse Champion Award from the publishers and editors of Diverse Issues in Higher Education for his lifetime support and contribution to increased diversity in American community colleges.

Dr. Roueche is also the recipient of the 2011 O’Banion Prize for Leadership in Teaching and Learning from the Educational Testing Service, the recipient of the National Distinguished Leadership Award from the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges as well as the 1988 B. Lamar Johnson Leadership Award from the League of Innovations in the Community College.

Dr. Terry O'Banion served as the president for the League for the Innovation in Community College for 23 years until his retirement. Under his leadership the League became an international organization serving over 700 colleges recognized by Change Magazine in 1998 as "the most dynamic organization in the community college world."


Dr. O’Banion has consulted in more than 800 community colleges in the United States and Canada. He is one of the leading spokespersons in the country on the Learning College and on the Completion Agenda, and has keynoted conferences on the Learning College in dozens of states and Canadian provinces and in Australia, the United Arab Emirates, and Japan. He is currently a major presenter on Student Success Pathways and the Completion Agenda.


Dr. O’Banion is also the author of 14 books and over 170 monographs, chapters, and articles on the community college. Since retirement O’Banion has worked on special projects for the League for Innovation, MetLife Foundation, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, The Chauncey Group International, and Walden University.
