Lynn WhitfieldBaton Rouge Community College (BRCC)’s Baton Rouge Advancing Health Literacy (BRAHL) program will host a Women’s Summit and Health Care Expo on Friday, April 21. The Summit will feature Baton Rouge native and iconic Emmy-winning Actress Lynn Whifield as the keynote speaker and will be held at BRCC’s Mid City Campus, in the Magnolia Theatre and Gallery, 201 Community College Dr. The Health Care Expo will take place from noon to 2 p.m., with the Women’s Summit immediately following from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The summit and expo will focus on uplifting women, increasing health awareness, and encouraging healthcare literacy. The Health Care Expo will offer a wide range of free screenings, health care vendors, information sessions, along with a JiggAerobics exercise class. There will also be food, music, and door prizes.

Following the Health Care Expo, a Women’s Summit will be held with Actress Lynn Whitfield.

About Lynn Whitfield

Iconic Emmy-winning actress Lynn Whitfield previously starred as the matriarch, Lady Mae Greenleaf, in the OWN family drama series, Greenleaf from playwright/show runner Craig Wright and executive producer Oprah Winfrey.

Whitfield is an Emmy Award winner for Best Actress in a Movie or Miniseries for her portrayal of Josephine Baker in HBO’s, The Josephine Baker Story. She was the second woman of color to win this award. Whitfield also received a Golden Globe nomination for this performance. Lynn is a four-time NAACP Award winner and has received numerous award nominations for her role in The Cheetah Girls.

She previously co-starred on numerous television series including ABC’s, Mistresses, How To Get Away With Murder, FlashFoward, HeartBeat, Chasing Life, VH1’s, Hit the Floor, Fox’s, Boston Public and CBS’, Without a Trace.

Feature films include the award-winning Eve’s Bayou as Roz, the diabolical Brandi in A Thin Line Between Love and Hate opposite Martin Lawrence, Taking the Heat opposite Tony Goldwyn, Tyler Perry’s, Madea’s Family Reunion, Stepmom, and as laugh-out-loud Debra in, Head of State opposite Chris Rock.

Whitfield received her BFA from Howard University and joined the theatre company, D.C. Black Repertory following her graduation. She later moved to New York City and performed in several off-Broadway shows including the acclaimed 1977 Los Angeles production of For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide/When the Rainbow is Enuf opposite Alfre Woodard.

Lynn is a Baton Rouge native and resides in New Orleans and Los Angeles. Whitfield is a longstanding member of The Creative Coalition and she actively campaigns to defy the stereotypes of women of color and change the dialogue of what it means to be a black actress in Hollywood.

Lynn is often referred to as a diva which she embraces as she defines it as someone who embraces hard work, excellence, purpose, and taking and giving love with passion. Lynn utilizes her keen eye for fashion and design in decorating and re-decorating her homes. She is an avid collector of many things chic. And loves a bargain.
