Dr. Sarah Barlow named Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs

SarahBaton Rouge Community College (BRCC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Barlow, Ph.D. as Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs. 

"Dr. Barlow has done a wonderful job of leading our academic and student affairs units as the interim vice chancellor since July," said BRCC Chancellor Dr. Willie E. Smith. "She has strong leadership skills, as well as a deep commitment to student success, and a long-standing connection with faculty and staff. I know she will serve the college well in this role." 

For over 10 years Dr. Barlow has served BRCC in roles in both Academic and Student Affairs, most recently serving as the Interim Vice Chancellor of Academic and Student Affairs.   

After earning her BA and MA in English from the University of Toledo in Toledo OH, Dr. Barlow moved to Louisiana to continue her education at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.  There she taught classes and focused on studies in Creative Writing, Composition Theory, Women's literature, and American literature, and earned her Ph.D. in English in 2010.  She began teaching full-time at Baton Rouge Community College that fall.  As a faculty member, Dr. Barlow became the chair of the Faculty Senate Assessment Committee, a Faculty Senator, a General Education Committee Member, and a Faculty Mentor.   

In 2014, Dr. Barlow became Chair of the English and Humanities Department where she served 40 full-time and adjunct faculty in multiple disciplines. In addition to creating the schedule of courses, observing and evaluating faculty, participating in program review and course assessment planning, assisting with curriculum development and articulation planning, addressing student concerns, and resolving conflict, she developed and co-chaired a New Student Orientation Model, multiple open house and advising events, and collaborated with enrollment services, advising and financial aid to enhance communication between units.        

Dr. Barlow joined the Student Services team at BRCC in 2018 as the Executive Director of Enrollment Management and Student Services and continued this  work as the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs in 2019 with responsibility for leading and coordinating the operations of the Student Affairs units including Enrollment Services, Admissions, the office of the Registrar, Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs, Advising, Counseling and Disability Services, Recruitment and Outreach, the Dean of Students Office, the Office of Student Life, the Career Center, and the TRiO/Upward Bound grants.  

As the Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs she partnered with the Student Affairs directors to explore opportunities to expand remote services.  The Student Affairs team was able to create the Virtual Student Center (VSC) and make all services virtual just 10 days after the college modified operations due to COVID - 19.  This resource allowed the college to successfully recruit, admit, advise, register, process financial aid, accept payment, and engage students in student life events without bringing a single student on campus. 

Serving as the Interim Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs, Dr. Barlow has worked to unite the goals of Academic and Student Affairs and align them with the mission of the college to be the preferred provider of talent.  A new organizational structure enhanced the unification of purpose and allowed the divisions to successfully implement the strategic scheduling process, initiate a new campus-wide advising model, formalize clear pathways for transfer students, improve access, and create an effective return to campus plan that focused on safety above all else.  Dr. Barlow is committed to a one college approach, communicating across campus, and bringing the team together for BRCC and its students. 

Dr. Barlow's appointment is effective November 30, 2020.
