All BRCC-PSE students are expected to become acquainted with Baton Rouge Community College policies, requirements, procedures, and regulations.  Students are to remain aware of these policies and procedures during their attendance at BRCC. In addition to the specific policies and procedures below, all “General Policies and Procedures” for all BRCC students apply.

PSE instructors, administrators, and other Baton Rouge Community College officials assist students in becoming acquainted with BRCC regulations; however, students must assume final responsibility for being acquainted with these. In no case will a regulation be waived, or an exception granted because a student pleads ignorance of the regulations.

Upon acceptance into PSE, all students are on a probationary status until the successful completion of one semester. PSE students will be expected to be acquainted with and adhere to the following:

Students will be evaluated not only as a student, but also as a prospective employee. Classroom and Job-site experiences should be considered a “long-term interview.”  The manner in which students interact and communicate with instructors, classmates, bosses, coworkers, and other employees reveals the students’ abilities to perform as a paid employee.  Upon completion of PSE, students are expected to exhibit competency in the foundational vocational skills of the program of study, make decisions based on knowledge obtained, listen and communicate effectively with bosses and coworkers, and work in a professional manner.

PSE students represent their program and BRCC. Students will receive training related to appropriate and professional behaviors both on campus and in the workplace. Students are expected and required to demonstrate professional behavior. Students may be subject to disciplinary action or removal from the program for poor performance, poor attendance, unsafe practices, unprofessional behavior, and/or infraction of the rules of Baton Rouge Community College or PSE.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Scale:

  • Students must maintain a “C” or higher in both classroom and vocational evaluations.
  • Rubrics will be used for some assessments in particular when observations are administered.
  • Demonstrate measurable academic progress as determined by the following:
    • Classroom grades
    • Observational data associated with individualized benchmarks
  • Demonstrate measurable vocational training/on-the-job training progress towards individualized benchmarks as determined by the following:
    • On-site observations
    • Employer/Co-worker interviews
    • Current vocational goals or objectives listed on an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)
  • Students will also create a cumulative “Portfolio Assessment of Learning”.
  • Students must repeat courses if they fall below a "C" in the class
  • Students may retake a test once to obtain a passing grade of “C”.

Attendance
Class attendance is regarded as an obligation as well as a privilege, and students are expected to attend all classes regularly and punctually. Failure to do so will jeopardize a student’s scholastic standing on their eligibility to participate in PSE.

Attendance will be checked at every class meeting.

Students must notify their instructor and job site supervisor of their absence no later than the morning of the absence.

When a student has missed 15% of a course, the PSE Director may remove the student by assigning a College-Initiated Withdrawal. As a result of this action, the student will receive a grade of “WN” for the course if action is initiated prior to the last day to drop.

NOTICE: More restrictive attendance requirements may apply in some specialized classes such as vocational externships/internships because of the nature of those courses. Neither the instructor nor Baton Rouge Community College assumes responsibility for students who are absent from these classes.

MANDATORY PARTICIPATIONALL students will be expected to participate in vocational training externships/internships. While it is possible that some will be paid, more often these externships/internships will be unpaid. Students will receive class credit in lieu of pay.

Classroom Syllabus
Students will receive a class syllabus at the beginning of each class. The syllabus will outline course work, quizzes, exams, and homework expectations. If a student is absent on a day that an exam/quiz is scheduled, he/she must arrange with the instructor for make-up exam/quiz. It is your responsibility to call the instructor and make arrangements for make-up work.

If a student knows in advance that he/she will be absent for one or more weeks, all scheduled course work, exams, quizzes, and homework must be completed prior to your absence.

Failure to complete make-up course work, exams, quizzes, and homework according to policy will result in a grade of zero %.

Electronic Device Use
No electronic devices, such as cell phones, iPods, or iPads, can be used during classroom or vocational job site training hours, unless authorized by the instructor or job site supervisors. Students who text during classroom hours or use their cell phone on a job site during scheduled work time will be dismissed/sent home and given an absence for the day.

Students required to leave the program for not meeting the above expectations can reapply for consideration the following semester no less than ONE MONTH before the next semester begins.  The PSE staff will carefully review the reason(s) why the student was required to leave the program and may be asked to meet for an interview.  The submission of a new application DOES NOT guarantee that the student will be accepted back into the PSE program.  The decision of the PSE staff is final.  If denied readmissions, the student will not be able to re-enter the program.
