Everyone has their own set time and season to shine in life.

Graduate Jamira Yarbrough Breaks Family Cycle and Sets New Path

A first-generation college student and graduate, Jamira Yarbrough wanted to break the cycle in her family and attend college to set a new path for herself and other family members to follow.

She realized that Baton Rouge Community College was a way that could open career and financial opportunities for her in the future.

While in high school, she was introduced to the TRIO Programs and took a few trips to college campuses which gave her a new perspective on her outlook on life’s opportunities. Yarbrough said the TRIO Program was very helpful in the process of getting her enrolled in college.

What she loves most about BRCC are the class sizes that feel more personalized to her learning style. She also appreciates how the instructors are always available to assist students in their learning needs.

Although there was a time when she was ready to throw in the towel, she knew that failure was not an option and was encouraged to continue after speaking with a BRCC advisor.

She decided to change her major and pursue her passion. Yarbrough will graduate with an Associate of Arts Louisiana Transfer degree and plans to further her education at Southern University in her pursuit to becoming a Social Worker.

Yarbrough said she wants to make a difference in the lives of individuals and quoted her favorite scripture Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

As she looks to the future and her next steps, Yarbrough advises others to, “Always remember to stay in your lane and move at your own pace because everyone has their own set time and season to shine in life.”
