This is just the beginning

Medical Assistant Graduate Amber Hawkins is Ready to Begin Next Chapter

Amber Hawkins enrolled at Baton Rouge Community College immediately after graduating high school.

She had a passion for life and for helping people. That passion led her to the Medical
Assistant program at BRCC.

As she completes the rigorous program, and begins her next chapter, Hawkins shares a bit of wisdom for students looking to enter into the Nursing and Allied Health Division, saying, “Life doesn’t begin at graduation. It began when you made the decision to start nursing school.”

Three deciding factors went into her decision to enroll at BRCC. First, it was hearing that most instructors could give more attention to their students when needed. Second, it was the smaller class sizes, which would allow for more one-on-one time for instructors. Third, it was the fact that her mom was a student at BRCC more than 20 years ago and was able to share her firsthand experience attending the college.

“I love being a part of the BRCC community because the instructors are not afraid to pause for a moment and help a student one-on-one,” said Hawkins.

Her future goal is to become a registered nurse and work in the emergency room.

Hawkins has been on the Chancellor’s List for the past two semesters and received a rating of outstanding on all evaluations during her clinical externship.

Her parting words to her fellow BRCC students are to have a passion and love for what you want to do in your career. Doing so will make your college experience much more enjoyable.

"I will miss the helpful atmosphere, the friendly faces, and most importantly the donut truck the parked outside of the Bienvenue building," said Hawkins with a big smile.
