BRCC student Lisa DiMaggio is the recipient of the 2023 Unsung Hero Award. DiMaggio received the award Thursday, Jan. 19, at the annual MLK Unity Celebration held on the campus of Southern University. DiMaggio was nominated by BRCC Professor Dr. Mary Miller.

"I feel honored to be included among students from Southern and LSU," said DiMaggio. "BRCC has offered me a community and a support network that I have never experienced before since stepping on this campus. Dr. Miller is my mentor, and she has taught me a lot about science and has absolutely changed my life."

DiMaggio is a General Science major with a 3.5 grade point average and plans to work in the medical field in a science research laboratory. DiMaggio is a wife, a mother of four, and served in the U.S. Navy.

Dr. Miller stated DiMaggio embodies the mission and values of BRCC by demonstrating integrity, respect for diversity, and teamwork.

The ceremony included BRCC, LSU, and Southern University honoring their student recipient of the Unsung Hero Award. Chancellor Smith, the SGA, Office of Student Life, and several faculty members were in attendance for the event.
