Chancellor’s Update: Online Classes Begin Monday, March 30

Dear BRCC Community,

What an amazing transition we have made so far in working together as a college community during this global pandemic. On Monday, March 30, we extend that transition even more with the start of online classes. Since this is all new to so many of us, we have been working to ensure we are offering support services at our maximum capacity. Among these incredible services is the creation of the Virtual Student Center, accessible to all students via Canvas. The Virtual Student Center will allow Enrollment Services staff to continue offering student support in the areas of advising, counseling, student leadership activities, and career services. The Magnolia Library also offers more than one hundred online databases for student, faculty and staff access, which include the full text of thousands of electronic journals, magazines, and newspapers, as well as over 70,000 eBooks. We’ve also compiled a list of online resources available for our students to assist with online learning connectivity. Please review the list as your time permits to learn about the opportunities that are being offered to members of the higher education community.

Unfortunately, we have had to make the difficult decision to postpone our Spring 2020 Commencement exercises. However, we are committed to our students and our graduates’ success will be celebrated at the right time in the near future.

Summer registration is now open and we will continue to offer all online courses until further notice. There are three summer sessions available. We encourage students to register now and secure your classes.

As a community college, we have a duty to support our city and surrounding areas. So, as part of our ongoing community commitment, we are so proud to report that our Division of Nursing and Allied Health has answered the call to donate necessary PPE supplies to healthcare facilities. Thank you to BRCC Nursing Lab Manager, Chad Wilson, Surgical Tech. Program Manager, Eboni Saurage, and Program Manager for Nursing, Tawna Pounders for working to gather our supply of gloves and N95 masks for the nursing and operating room staffs at Baton Rouge General. We sincerely appreciate this sacrifice made by our nursing and allied health students, faculty, and staff.

We are also showing our support through giving internally to support our college community. You can show your support as well by making a donation to the BRCC Foundation’s Emergency Relief Support Fund. The Fund will assist students, faculty and staff that have been financially impacted by this pandemic. Any amount can help.

Finally, we extend our gratitude to all of our faculty and staff for your continued commitment to student success and access, and workplace excellence. We also commend our students for your dedication to BRCC and your understanding as we all adapt to the ongoing changes. Please continue to stay home and follow established procedures and guidelines set forth by the Centers for Disease Controland be safe and healthy. We encourage you to continue monitoring your email, and BRCC’s social media accounts and website for important updates shared by the College.

Let’s finish this semester strong! We look forward to welcoming everyone back from Spring Break on Monday as we start our online classes.
