PRAXIS

The Praxis Series™ Assessments provide educational tests and other services that states use as part of their teaching licensing certification process. The Praxis I® tests measure basic academic skills; The Praxis II® tests measure general and subject-specific knowledge and teaching skills.

PRAXIS I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessments (PPST®) are designed to measure basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. The reading, writing, and mathematics assessments are available in two formats: paper-based or computer-based. Many colleges and universities may use PRAXIS I: Pre-Professional Skills Assessments to evaluate individuals for entry into teacher education programs. The assessments are generally taken early in your college career.

PRAXIS II: Subject Assessment tests measure knowledge of specific subjects that K-12 educators will teach, as well as general and subject-specific teaching skills and knowledge. Examples of subjects assessed are English, math, social studies, and science. There are Subject Assessments, Principles of Learning and Teaching (PLT) Tests and Teaching Foundations Tests. Many individuals entering the teaching profession take these tests as part of the teacher licensing and certification process required by many states. A number of professional associations and organizations require these tests as one criterion for professional licensing decisions.

BRCC Requirements:

Recommended schedule for taking PRAXIS tests for BRCC:

  1. Take the practice test in the ALC after taking ENGL 101 and MATH 101/110.
  2. Take PRAXIS I after completing ENGL 102 & MATH 167. You must make an attempt of PRAXIS I before enrolling in TEAC 203.
  3. Take PRAXIS II (0014) early in the last semester at BRCC.
  4. Passing of both tests is required for graduation, so students should allow plenty of time to retest in case of not reaching the state passing score.
  5. Go to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) website. Look at Most Requested Information. Scroll down to Teacher Certification and click on PRAXIS/NTE Requirements to get the most updated PRAXIS scores. Or you can download the PRAXIS scores as of February 9, 2007.

Resources:

Educational Testing Service (ETS) is the site that handles The Praxis Series™ Assessments. All information regarding scheduling, costs, and frequently asked questions can be found at this site, including the descriptions of each test.

Southern University offers two types of assisted instruction. One is the CAP class, a one hour credit course that uses computer-assisted instruction in an individualized way to prepare students for the PRAXIS I test. Workshops are also offered on Saturday mornings from 9am to 1 pm on various topics to prepare students for the PRAXIS II test. Contact Dr. Willa Moore at 771-4636 for more information and schedules for the topics covered each Saturday.

BRCC Academic Learning Center houses a variety of study guides created by professors to aid the pre-service teacher in preparation for the PRAXIS I and II tests. Go to the ALC site to schedule an appointment with a staff member (Contact Jeanne Stacy, Assistant Director of ALC) trained in preparing you for the The Praxis Series™Assessments. The staff member will assist you in your preparations by having you take a PRAXIS I Practice Test that utilizes the PLATO Learning software. The PLATO software helps a student work on the test components that were areas of weaknesses. The staff member can also aid you in accessing the PRAXIS II study guides and offer guidance in how best to utilize them. These study guides are also accessible using the links below. PLATO also offers several courses to aid students in preparing for the PRAXIS II test. Click here for a document outlining the PLATO course descriptions for PRAXIS II alignment courses.

PRAXIS I Study Guides: The greatest resource offered at BRCC for students preparing for the PRAXIS I test is to utilize the PRAXIS I Practice Test and PLATO software featured at the Academic Learning Center. Please refer to the paragraph featured above on this resource. Also, commercial simulated tests are available in the library or for purchase in bookstores, such as Cliff Test Preparation for PRAXIS I, The Complete Preparation Guide PRAXIS I (2nd ed.), PRAXIS Elementary Education by REA, and the ETS Elementary Content Knowledge Study Guide (2001).

PRAXIS II Study Guides: Courses taken at BRCC to enhance learning in the core subjects of English, math, social studies, and science cover a range of topics. It was noted that the PRAXIS II Content Area tests also focus on the following sub-categories within these core subjects:
