BRCC students receive national awards for neuroscience research

stemTwo Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students, Megan Moore and Ryan LeBlanc received national recognition for their contributions to neuroscience research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS).

ABRCMS is the largest, professional conference for minority students to pursue advance training in STEM. Students come from over 350 U.S. colleges and universities. This year's conference was held in Seattle, Washington.

Under the leadership of Mary Miller, BRCC biology professor and sponsorship of the BRCC-LSU NIH Bridges to the Baccalaureate Program (BBP), Moore and LeBlanc participated in several months of research at Louisiana State University (LSU) making significant contributions.

One of the outcomes of their project included professional development through presentation at the ABRCMS. Their poster and oral presentations were subject to evaluation by active research scientists, and the highest scores in each scientific discipline were awarded for outstanding research.

"These students are highly motivated and will continue to make rapid progress towards their associate degree in STEM disciplines at BRCC. The goal of the BPP is to support their studies at BRCC and promote their transfer to LSU or other four-year STEM programs," said Dr. Guillermo Ferreyra, PI for the NIH funded BPP grant and dean for the LSU College of Arts and Science.

Dr. Loretta Ovueraye, BRCC dean of STEM and Laura Younger, BRCC department chair for science,  applaud the efforts of the two students and their mentors.

"BRCC has solid STEM programs that make programs like this possible. We are very proud of Megan and Ryan and we look forward to their future contributions to the world of science," said Ovueraye. "It is remarkable that BRCC and LSU have partnered to provide opportunities like this to enable students in two-year colleges to seamlessly transfer to a four-year STEM degree with self-confidence, professionalism, and a solid academic background."
