The Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) Theatre presents “Children of a Lesser God,” opening on Thursday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Magnolia Theater located on the Mid City Campus, 201 Community College Drive.
“Children of a Lesser God,” a Tony Award-winning Broadway play written in 1980 by Mark Medoff, is a deeply moving, beautifully written love story that details the romance and marriage of a spirited deaf girl and the devoted and hearing young teacher she meets at the school for the deaf. The play enters the culture of deaf to make profound observations about disabilities.
The centerpiece of the show, the role of Sarah Norman Leeds is being performed by an Assistant Principal at the Louisiana School for the Deaf, Candi Harbison. She is a graduate of Gallaudet University and a 2009 recipient of the Gallaudet University Museum of Deaf Life Outstanding Student Appreciation Award.
Dr. Tony E. Medlin, assistant professor of theater at BRCC directed and collaborated with Mark Medoff on the play’s Dallas premiere. Come out and experience the rich and complex world of silence and discover some of the daily challenges facing our deaf community.
