Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) is excited to bring to Baton Rouge, the award-winning documentary, "Alive Inside: A Story of Music and Memory."

The film will be screened in the Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion, 201 Community College Drive, on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., and Thursday, Nov. 5 at 1p.m. The screening on Thursday is for BRCC students, faculty, and staff.

Directed by Michael Rossato-Benett, the inspirational and emotional documentary won the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The film follows New York social worker, Dan Cohen, as he fights to show others how music can combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from dementia.

Cohen is the founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, which endeavors to have all nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the U.S. provide individualized music to residents living with Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.

"We're very excited to bring this film to BRCC for Baton Rouge-area nursing home professionals to see, and hopefully inspire them to start their own Music and Memory program," said Dr. Bridget Sonnier-Hillis, BRCC psychology instructor.

On Wednesday, Nov. 4, a panel of local experts will participate in an audience Q&A following the screening. The panel will include:

Rob Brouillette, Pennington Institute for Dementia Research and Prevention; Dr. Priscilla Allen, LSU's School of Social Work; and Barbara Auten, Executive Director of Alzheimer's Services of the Capital Area.

Continuing education credits will also be available for nursing home administrators, social workers, and activity professionals on Wednesday. BRCC will be collecting gently used iPods from Nov. 5-24.

This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call (225) 216-8094. For media inquiries, call LaTonya Scott at (225) 216-8106 or scottl@mybrcc.edu.
