|BRCC receives $46,400 donation from The Dow Foundation for new program targeting women|
Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) recently received a $46,400 donation from The Dow Foundation for a new program called Women in Welding.
The contribution from The Dow Foundation will provide scholarships to students interested in enrolling in short-term training to earn non-credit industry-based certifications. The funds will go toward equipment, training, safety equipment, and more.
The Women In Welding Program will address training needs for individuals that are unemployed, underemployed, and/or veterans aiming to improve careers through advanced training in the high growth markets of the industrial sectors.
Participants will receive craft training and soft skills training. Students will also receive mentoring from experienced women welders.
With wages rising and the need for more welders, women are now stepping up to fill the void. 28-year-old Angel Yaghi, is ecstatic about starting the program.
“I have been interested in obtaining training such as this for quite some time. It’s exciting to be a part of a welding program that is focused on women,” she stated.
According to the American Welding Society, it is estimated that only 5% of welders in the U.S. are women. However, many in the welding industry believe that women possess the characteristics that make up a good welder, including great hand-eye coordination and patience.
Classes at BRCC’s Port Allen Campus begin this Saturday, June 21 (9 a.m.-4 p.m.). Classes at the Plaquemine Campus begin Monday, June 23 (9 a.m.-4 p.m.) Both classes are full.
