Why do we write?
Writing is a complex mental task and a very personal activity that enables
us to think and learn about ourselves and the world. We write to satisfy
the need to express our views, to explain ourselves or our knowledge,
to understand ourselves, to teach ourselves what we know or do not know,
and to convince others of what we know.
Why do instructors give us writing assignments?
Your instructors give you writing assignments to check on your ability
to communicate your ideas in a unified, organized composition, on your
mastery of the subject matter, and on your ability to use a prescribed
or acceptable format.
Where do you go for writing assistance?
Tutors in the Academic Learning Center can assist you with understanding
your assignment, collecting your ideas, getting started, and examining
your writing for clear expression and meaning. Come by or call 216-8300
to make an appointment or e-mail your paper to wcenter@mybrcc.edu.
If you choose to e-mail your paper, send a message asking for assistance.
As soon as the tutor reads your message, she or staff member will reply
as soon as possible telling you of the next steps to take. If you are
in a rush, remember to keep the hours of operation for the Center in mind
so that your request or paper will arrive when the staff are in the office.
